Snoring results from the vibration of the soft tissues surrounding the throat as air passes through a narrowed airway. It affects almost 50 percent of adults, and about half those are chronic snorers. It can be caused by a number of factors, including obesity, alcohol intake, anatomical differences, and assuming a recumbent position during sleep.
Apart from being bothersome, snoring can lead to a lot of problems. It can affect people’s health, their relationships, and their careers. Medically, snoring can predispose an individual to a myriad of health issues, obstructive sleep apnea or OSA, being one of the worst. As the term implies, people suffering from OSA have episodic pauses in respiration during sleep due to an obstructed airway. This happens many times over the night and consequently the snorer does not get enough sleep.
Without snoring cures, sleep deprivation can lead to exhaustion and to problems with coordination and concentration. They are also at risk of blacking out putting them at even greater risk, like road accidents or work-related injuries. If that doesn’t kill them, brain damage and heart complications will. Fortunately, snoring is relatively manageable, and there are plenty of snoring solutions to choose from.
Some of the commonly prescribed snoring cures include mandibular advancement splints which work by holding the lower jaw slightly forward to prevent the airway from being occluded. One should make sure to get a properly fitted oral appliance though, not only for comfort but also to prevent dental problems.
Snoring pillows have also been used for a long time to help reduce both volume and frequency of snoring. These special pillows are contoured to maintain proper head and neck alignment while sleeping. Snoring pillows come in different styles and made of different materials but employ the same head-neck positioning principle to achieve results. They are especially made to reduce snoring among back sleepers.
Snoring is just as a problem to the snorer, as it is to their bed partners. Some studies have shown that bed partners typically miss at least 1 hour of their sleeping time every night. There are even times when the non-snoring partner vacates their room to sleep elsewhere in the house, which could lead to feeling of estrangement. Alternatively, the snorer’s bed partner can use a less drastic snoring solution, earplugs for instance.
